In and Around Hillcrest

Fall 2007

The usual stuff happened this semester. Here's everything important that I could find pictures of condensed down to one page. Yes, it's all stolen from other people... except for maybe three pictures.

Apparently at the end of last semester, I was selected as the Campus-Wide Student of the Year. Yay. Unfortunately, they spelled my name wrong. It's OK, though, because it's better than when I was the Campus Wide-Student of the Month in October.
Move-in went well, and we even got a nifty new futon. It cost $75 to ship it to Blacksburg, but at least they brought it straight to our door.
Hey, free food happened in the stadium again. This time they had us walk through the tunnel and across the field just like the football team. Ooh, ahh. Also: Kevin with practically no hair.
Bugs!
Little did I know that this was going to be the start of a year filled with many somewhat formal events with the CEE department. This here is some sort of alumni awards ceremony, but the important thing is my tie. Check it out, it's a gift from Brad when he went through Mongolia on his trip this summer. He says that it's an old Mongolian language, written in some ornate script.

When I asked him what it said, he told me that it's the Mongolian word for "tie." It figures.
Our whiteboard got very bizzare and very pop-culture-ish very quickly.
Carpentry in the halls: just another day in Hillcrest. Brad and I had to cut part of his shelves off to hold his ENORMOUS TV. Thanks to Kathleen for these pictures.
Just a few days later, we found this sketchy looking sight in the TV lounge. It was gone in the morning, so my theory is that somebody had to take care of some legitimate family business.
It's the Most Glorious Sunset Ever!
Seriously.
And check out this rainbow that we almost missed.

The great thing about college is that you can be doing work and then somebody runs up and tells you "there's this great rainbow across the street" and you can easily incite a mob of 20 or 30 people to immediately drop what they're doing and dash outside.

Grilling was a popular thing this year, especially with all of the football games.
However, there were a few other cookouts as well, and I often cooked at these things so that the RAs could hold an event with food and not have to get a temporary restaurant permit. I mean, ostensibly it's my cookout, and so what if the RAs just happened to be holding an event with drinks and chips right next door? And so what if they're the ones who gave me the stuff to cook?
Look, it's nerds playing kickball.
The RAs put on a competition within the building, and this was one of the events.
My team won, by the way, so there.
We went to Cinco de Mayo for my birthday this year, and the server was smart enough to give the three of us at the end of the table our Dr. Peppers in especially large vessels so he wouldn't have to reach down to the end but so often.
Brad's muffler fell off. This was notable at the time, but now not so much.
None of us live in this room, and we all have our computers.
Fall NerdFest 2007 (Also Stolen)
Yay, we performed passably this time!
I mean, we were terrible at frisbee, video games, and we barely lost Jeopardy...
But we rocked the house in Cranium, Taboo, and volleyball...
And pulled out the win in Price is Right...

Which was awesome, if I do say so myself. You should have seen the amazing set and game boards that I helped come up with. Seriously. It's a shame none of the pictures came out.
