January 2006

Things really took a while to get back to business here. However, there were a few especially interesting... events, I suppose is the term, that really served to kick off the semester.

Frisbee

Frisbee at the Duck Pond with fellow Hillcrustaceans! Here's a nice level pass from Jeremy to David.
And this pass was a little off, but still, a nice catch.

Man, it was SO nice outside! For 4 consecutive weeks, we had very mild afternoons, great for football (see next month) and frisbee.

Jeremy can really run fast. He can make some amazing receptions. Just wanted to get that out there to explain this picture.
Yes, I was there! Check out my new Philmont hat. It's maroon... so it kind of goes with Tech.

VT's Black History Month - Rev. Jesse Jackson

January = Multicultural Awareness Month

To kick off the event, there's always a big keynote address. Last year, it was Al Sharpton. This year, they were going for either Barack Obama or Jesse Jackson. Obama had some senatorial stuff to do, so we got Rev. Jackson. Tickets were free, with a maximum of 5 per person... except for RA's.
The building's 3rd Floor RA, Rick, went down to the ticket office and was given 20 tickets... in the front 3 rows of the far right section. So on the Monday evening before classes started, 1/5 of the building headed down to Burruss Auditorium for the program.

Here, people get ready to head out. Except Steve, as evidenced by the lack of shoes.

[Walking to Burruss].

Watch out for that car!
After about 20 other people got up and spoke (mostly introducing the person after them... who was introducing the person after them... and so on), Rev. Jackson finally got started.

Check out the elaborate stage setup.

He likes gestures.
And making points.

Afterwards, he got about 20 different awards from various organizations and then proceeded to do an "altar call" of sorts for voting registration. Yeah... it was the Neverending Program.

And here's some of the crowd (the ones who stuck around for a while) standing right next to our totally awesome seats.

Lord of the Rings [Extended Edition] Marathon
Apparently, an annual event in Hillcrest is the Lord of the Rings marathon. All three movies... all extended editions... all back to back to back. 13 hours, including breaks for lunch and dinner. Here, the crowd watches special features during one of the breaks.

And here's the same picture... with a flash! You can tell now that we use the Hillcrest Dining room, simply hooking up a projector and dragging in a bunch of couches. It's the largest blank, white wallspace in the building.
It was dark in there. So here's a 15 second exposure of the people watching. Good thing couch potatos are a stationary people. I don't know how Jeremy managed to catch on and sit that still in that exact position for that long. This picture was taken at 1:00 AM, with about half of Return of the King to go.
