| This month was weird. Here's why. Enough said. |

CEE 2814 - Measurements
| One of the classes I'm taking this year is CEE Measurements. It's essentially a surveying class. | ![]() |

One of the labs that we have to do involves making a topographic map. It took two lab periods, and about 12 hours of meetings over the weekend before it was due to put it together.
| We took almost 200 points of data with our really expensive (don't break it!) surveying equipment. | ![]() |

First, we plotted the points on a 2x3 foot piece of grid paper. Then we connected the dots and figured out where along those lines the two foot contour lines went, based on some linear interpolation. It was really nifty to see how it worked out.
| We then connected the contour lines and the dots indicating the planimetric features (parking lots and whatnot). | ![]() |

We then smoothed out the contour lines using a set of French curves. It looked really cool, and here's a larger version.

Chi Epsilon Website
Another thing that I worked on this month is the website for Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society. They used to have a website, but it was still on the ce.vt.edu server, meaning they hadn't updated it since the department expanded their name to "Civil AND ENVIRONMENTAL Engineering." So we had to start from scratch. It still needs some filling in, but if you want to check it out it is at: chiep.cee.vt.edu |

April Pranks
![]() |
Mitch and Susan have been having a prank war with Jeremy. First they filled up his shower with newspapers. Then, he did something to them that they haven't yet found, but I'm quite sure that they're not going to be happy when they find out what it is. So anyway, to start off round two they went out to Wal-Mart and bought a bunch of Easter grass on sale. Over 100 packages, in fact.
| Aww... look at them. Oh, and look at the two inches of easter grass covering Jeremy's floor. The eggs are a nice touch. | ![]() |

Surplus Auction
![]() |
For the longest time I've been looking to get a second screen for my computer. I could only fit a flat panel there, so I've been looking for a flat panel. I said that the first time I could find one for uner $75 I'd take it. So at the April surplus auction, I finally found one. It is really great, and has made the coding for this site much easier.

Candlelight Vigil
Preface: Bad stuff happened. Check the news.
| On the day after the event, the university (Hokies United, specifically) held a candlelight vigil. Many people showed up. This is the crowd in attendance when the event was supposed to be beginning. | ![]() |

Lots of people were there. It was really quite inspiring. Apparently some important people showed up, but I couldn't see them from where I was.
| Look at the sea of people. After the conclusion of the ceremony, people started doing school chants. Here's a video. | ![]() |

Event the piles of trash had school spirit.
| This is Norris hall. Many people had congregated, silently, around it at the police tape. Even at 9pm, police officers still went in and out of the building. | ![]() |
![]() |
People go together in various places to talk, or in this case, to play muzak.
| Even though the formal event ended an hour ago, there were still many people here as I left. | ![]() |

An Intentsly Campy Adventure
On the Thursday of the week off from school, a group of us decided to go camping. Mallory took enough pictures that this event merits its own page. Click here to go there now. |

Final Colloquium Session of the Semester
| We decided that the weather was so wonderful outside that we would have the last session of our Colloquium Magnus class outside. I'd always wanted to set up a sofa in the yard, and Tory was totally gung-ho about the whole idea. | ![]() |

So we did. People had a good time.
