This semester started off rather quickly, with a number of stock beginning-of-the-year events. However, enough unusual and moderately picturesque events occured to spice up the weeks.

Section 5:
September 2006 Coffeehouse

In true Hillcrest tradition, it was only a matter of time before we had a coffeehouse. Again I helped set it up, but this year I was given the chance to MC the whole thing. So, armed with a whole cache of terrible jokes, I got up and started the thing. It went fairly well. Oh, and thanks to Elaine for the pictures since I couldn't take pictures whilst organizing the whole thing.

The crowd assembles in anticipation of the first coffeehouse of the year. If you look closely, you can even spot some Main Campbellonians in the audience.
I got the program going with a monologue of bear jokes. For instance: what kind of bear dissolves in water? A polar bear! But look, two wireless microphones! Horrah! One of them is mine, even.
Meanwhile, this sort of thing is happening in the audience. Oh Will, my Freshman Honors Seminar mentee, and Juila, that person who lives down the hall. Both really weird people. And I honestly don't hold it against them.
But there were actual acts, including this choral group. They were singing happy birthday to two people who had their birthdays the next day. Awwww.
And look, it's Chris with his guitar.
And in an amazing feat of skill: Chris, playing the guitar behind his head. Who knew we had such talented people in the building?
And now appearing on the Hillcrest stage: David with his cello. He's pretty good at it. And ladies, he's still single...
And next up, it's Nate, fresh out of marching band practice to play us Disney movie songs on the saxophone.
And now, for a break: it's Family Feud, as hosted by Greg! He even dressed up for the occasion.
Here, Rick and Jerry square off to see which team (a half of the room) gets the option to play or pass.
Jeremy says "Applause," darn it! And in the background, I run the game board. It's really a powerpoint presentation with clickable objects that I run on a borrowed tablet computer. Once I hook it up to the projector and the speakers, we're off. I think it went over fairly well.
And now, on to the third half of the coffeehouse!
Here, people hold up their cell phones to indicate enjoyment of the current act, since lighters are illegal inside buildings on Tech's campus.
And in order to properly hear the acts, I had to do a great deal of microphone adjustments on the fly to tailor the audio system to the diverse acts we saw throughout the night.
Ben + French Horn = Awesome
Pete plays us a little ditty on his mandolin while Peter looks on and scans his list of jokes for some filler material.
Aww, Erin and Will...
Picture courtesy of Erin (one of the four of them in the building... it's all very confusing) of me doing a little interview of David to pass the time while he tunes up. I mean, you've got to get everybody to know each other, right? Isn't that the general idea of a community.
More Pete, please.
Here, I deploy some of my terrible, terrible jokes to fill the time between acts.
I have no words for this picture, except that Julia's expression (on the left) conveys the general reaction towards my jokes.
A stringed duet with David and Pete to end the coffeehouse. Horrah, horrah. See you in early November for the next one, right after the Kent State football game. Maybe they're somebody our team can actually beat.
