Febtober! Febturday! February!
Hillcrest Hodgepodge

February 2006

February's production was massive: over 315 source objects with which to make this webisode. So one could seriously say that the Virginia Tech Experience is back in full swing this month. The ever unpredictable Blacksburg weather (and its equally unpredictable Hillcrest Residents) will be sure to astound (or appall) you this month.

Hillcrest Hodgepodge

OK, it starts out normal, but some of this stuff is just plain weird. You've been warned. That's all I really can say.

Ten Kilodollars
At the twice annual Hillcrest Senior Toast back in December, university President Steger made a suprise announcement. He pledged $10,000 of university money towards any project we chose that would give back to the students and faculty of Virginia Tech. Thus, the Charles Steger $10K Challenge got under way.
The first real event put on by the $10K Challenge committee was a Lunch/presentation designed to show off the ideas put forward by various Honors community members. We heard about reducing light pollution, putting art on campus, and creating a foreign language online tutoring lab, among other ideas.

Using this information, the residentw will vote for their favorite ideas, which will then be refined and voted on again later in the year before the final presentation to the university's Board of Visitors. [I might even get to help run A/V tech for that presentation. Yay. In fact, you can see what a good job I did on this presentation in the above (^) picture. Yay again.]
The pizza was quite good. None of us were sure whether the costs of the lunch subtracted from the $10K, leaving the proposals with $9.9K.

So why did I take so many pictures of this mediocre event? Well, President Steger very nearly came, and if he had, some of my pictures may have ended up in the university newspaper, the Collegiate Times. But he couldn't make it.

Jukebox!
In an attempt to kill brain cells and sabatoge the Honors students' grades, Tech's Housing and Dining Programs department decided in their infinite wisdom to repaint the interior of the entire building over 4 weeks while school was in session. Fortunately, one good thing did come out of it... the painters left an attic door unlocked one night, leaving us enough time to explore and find (amongst the old toilets and tubs of carpet glue) a classic 1970 Wurlitzer Statesman jukebox!

Fortunately, we have a bunch of smart electrical engineering types in the building, and they took it upon themselves to take the jukebox from an assortment of sabatoged wires and torn speakers to a working, iPod compatible, music blaring machine.

They did a very good job.

Super Bowl XL
But Hillcrest residents aren't all about hard work and fixing things. They also like to relax and try to have a good time. So it was only natural that a few of the more sporty Hillcrustaceans decided to throw a Super Bowl party. And they asked me to help them set up the room. Check out our half living room/half sports bar type setup.

Couches + Tables = Something for Everybody.

They even got a cake! Can you tell who the primary organizers were rooting for? [Hint: Read the Cake]
I was there! I scored a nice chair and settled my self down for a long winter's nap... I mean, a long engineering homework assignment.

Only in Hillcrest is playing spades considered an appropriate pregaming activity.
You see, here, we have an artsy shot that includes a little bit of the projector beam, a little bit of the residents, a little bit of the food, and a little bit of John Madden.

Now bear in mind: the nearest cable outlet is upstairs in one of the RA's rooms. But that wasn't going to stop us from setting up in the spacious dining room. We just needed a rather substantial amount of coaxial cable. Here is half of the 100 feet we used.
And here the cable is making the transition between floors. To see the cable pulling job in its entirety, click here.

Will the Real Miscellany Please Stand Up?

It was Black History Month. The RAs have to make bulletin boards every once in a while, and this was one of them. Now, when I looked at it, I saw an iPod commercial. Do you see it? With the silhouettes and the monochromatic background?
How about now? I didn't have 3 sets of headphones, so I just stuck three pictures together to get this result.

This was (and still is) a very odd picture.

In honor of Mardi Gras, one of the dining centers went Cajun in its theme. They had lots of unusual foods, including these underwater spiders. Don't dispute it... that's all most shellfish are. Greg down the hall figured out that they were finger sized. You can see the results of this discovery in a scene in the new Talking Heads Teaser Trailer for Techaanisqatsi.
See you in March, everybody. We'll try to do better than one month after the month ends for posting this time.
